"Valve" to Protect Against Energy Surges (from PQNews)
According to a recent New
York Times article, a Latham, N.Y. company, Intermagnetics General, will
build a prototype device designed to protect the power grid from energy surges,
like those that caused the largest blackout in U.S. history on August 14. The
device, called a matrix fault current limiter, reacts in less than a 60th of a
second.
Made of a super
conducting material comprised of bismuth, strontium, calcium, copper, and
oxygen, the device will use a controlled rise in temperature (from 77 Kelvin,
or about 320 degrees below zero Fahrenheit) to choke off the flow of power. It
will not act as a circuit breaker but will reduce the surge down to a level
that conventional circuit breakers can handle.
The project is expected to cost $12.2 million, with EPRI contributing $600,000 and the Energy Dept. providing $6 million, and to operate at a scale for use by public utilities by 2006.

Coal
vs. Wind Power: You be the Judge
The
Energy Policy Act of 2003, sponsored by Republican Sen. Pete Domenici of
New Mexico, points in the wrong direction. At a time when America needs safe,
clean, affordable energy, this bill is harmful to consumers and the
environment. This is a regressive bill that, among other things, reduces public
utility protection for consumers; leaves taxpayers responsible for up to half
the construction costs of new nuclear reactors; provides $10 billion in
subsidies for the already lucrative oil and natural gas industries; and
encourages reckless mining and hazardous disposal of millions of gallons of
underground water by the coal bed methane industry. Public Citizen, a national,
nonprofit, public interest organization, has prepared electronic letters and
faxes to expedite your participation in our democracy. Take a minute and let
your legislators know how you feel. Don't forget to remind them that you'll be
in the voting booth come election time.
